When I tell friends and family that I work in interiors a very agreeable noise ensues. It sounds something like this: “mm”. This is because those outside the industry see it as a very pleasant, relaxed day job. These people picture interior designers strolling through the ambient isles of John Lewis, vase in one hand and soy latte in the other smiling and nodding to everyone because they are having such a pleasant old time.<\/p>\n

For those who work in the industry, this ideal could not be further removed from reality. Attending photo shoots that look fabulous, but just one step back will show that the curtains have been duct-taped to the wall, there’s a pile of boxes poised threateningly over your head and more than likely, you have to rush to get the kids from school\/meet a client\/find a new sofa\/have a lie down.<\/p>\n

Despite the overwhelming stress of the industry, I love it. Here are a few signs that you work in interior design…<\/p>\n

g<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Gusto<\/p>\n

1.)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 You go shopping for your kids\u2019 birthday present and come back with a Gusto Illuminated Ice Bucket.<\/p>\n

2.)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 You can\u2019t walk down the street without peering over hedges to get a glimpse inside other peoples\u2019 houses.<\/p>\n

\"Christmas<\/p>\n

3.)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Instead of asking for sweets when you\u2019re trick or treating with your kids you ask where they got that vase from?<\/p>\n

4.)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 You insist on decorating the Christmas tree in the exact colour scheme of your living room.<\/p>\n

5.)\u00a0You paint your nails to match this season\u2019s purple and grey trend.<\/p>\n

6.)\u00a0\u00a0You’re at your friends house and instantly notice that their curtains are becoming unhooked \u2013 is it okay to just hook them back on when they\u00a0aren\u2019t looking?<\/p>\n

7.)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 You have to leave your phone on the table during dinner in case your client calls.<\/p>\n

8.)\u00a0You consider going to that extremely important client meeting even though you\u2019ll be late to pick your kids up from school\u2026 It\u2019s not that cold in January, plus they have mittens.<\/span><\/p>\n

9.)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 You spend time racking your brains on how to tell your client that orange velvet is not okay without offending them.<\/p>\n

10.)\u00a0You have about 12 boxes of fabric samples in your home and have thrown half your books in the attic to make space for them.<\/span><\/p>\n

11.)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Every time your mother-in-law visits you put her wedding gift\/birthday present to you on the mantelpiece \u2013 it\u2019s too ugly to have out at all times, but you don\u2019t want to offend her.<\/span><\/p>\n

12.)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 You pretend to your friends to be excited for fashion week but really it just means that it\u2019s one step closer to design week!<\/p>\n

13.)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 You rely on to-do lists to get through your day but often won\u2019t cross anything off until 4pm due to a few surprise client crises.<\/p>\n

14.)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Friends will often pick a string of fabric out of your hair and you will have absolutely no idea when or how it got there.<\/p>\n

15.)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 You know the difference between a swag, a tail and a pelmet \u2013 and you\u2019re not okay with any of them.<\/p>\n

16.)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 You look at interior design blogs for inspiration and end up on the same blog for hours. Once you\u2019ve snapped back to reality you realise you\u2019ve been dribbling.<\/p>\n

17.)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 You refuse to put your children\u2019s artwork on the fridge. If it\u2019s not Dali, it\u2019s not going up.<\/p>\n
