What with iPads, MP3s, smartphones and Google Glass – all of which can tell you the time – clocks have been pushed aside as an accessory for the home. I think they’re underestimated these days. There are so many different styles to choose from, reminiscent of different eras and adding bucketloads of character to your home. Here’s a reminder of what’s out there…

Art deco
In the 1920s and 1930s clock design was heavily influenced by the Art Deco movement. This clock is designed my Cartier, and similar artefacts can be found on eBay or in antique shops. They might come as more of an investment but they’ll never go out of style.

Industrial
This 1940s American clock belonged in a gymnasium and has industrial revolution written all over it. I love the gritty cage covering the clock face. This would be a fantastic centrepiece for a room that needs livening up a bit, and will definitely be a talking point amongst guests.

Mod clock
This spikey, sunshine style was super popular in the laidback ’60s. It’ll add a bit of funk to your space and looks fantastic with vintage furniture from the same era. Keep the colours simple as the design itself makes enough of a statement.

Country style
To get the farmhouse look, go for an antique oversized clock. This one is larger than life and adds real character to the cosy kitchen. This will look great with a large, industrial table and simple, clean lines. It’s important not to over-clutter with such a large clock so keep it simple.
