Accessory of the week: Musical Instruments

December 16th, 2013 by Debbie

When I think of interior design I’ll imagine lamps, chairs, sofas, curtains, carpet. More often than not, what makes a room unique is not the furniture but what you surround it with. A home is the ornaments on the mantel piece, the vase on the table and the guitar in the corner.

I’m reading a wonderful book called The Piano Shop on the Left Bank by an American writer called Thad Carhart. The second part of the title is Discovering a Forgotten Passion in a Paris Atelier, and the author’s rediscovery of his love for the piano made me think of the importance of instruments in a home. So – here it is. My accessory of the week: musical instruments.

A piano is often a statement piece in a room – however in this interior it becomes part of the furniture and adds an unexpected twist to a conventional room.

Hanging your guitar on the wall can make a real statement. This image shows a guitar-filled statement wall which really helps give you an idea of the identity of this home-owner.

Making your piano stand out with some bright paint can completely transform a room. This beautiful instrument is now the focal point of this room and complements the vintage print above and lights the room up entirely.

Saxophone Ornament

This is actually an ornament, but I love it so much I had to include it. I love the rusty brass next to the modern, minimal white. This is a great way of adding a touch of vintage to your home.

Banjo and Ukulele

The best thing about having your instruments on show is that it allows guests an insight to your personality and interested. A bongo drum and ukulele are fantastic talking points and will make your room look interesting and quirky.
