Ideas for alternative homes

February 2nd, 2015 by Debbie

Have you ever lost sleep over the cost of housing these days? Or how steep your mortgage is? Or have you ever worried you’ll never be able to even afford a house in this horrific climate?

Well, here I am to save the day and save you money. Here are some alternatives to shake up your conventional idea of a home, and perhaps give you an idea for an affordable second home…

1.) A bus

Bus living ain’t such a bad idea if you think about it… Sure, you won’t be able to have a family but you will be able to be on the open road forever. And look how surprisingly roomy it can be!

2.) A boat house

This isn’t a particularly new concept to anyone but it’s still a great idea. Along with mooring costs, you can buy a house boat in London for £80,000 and find a stunning place to moor it too. You can enjoy the English summer on a trip up the Thames through Reading and Oxford, and then moor up outside your favourite pub during winter.

3. A shipping container

I’ve noticed a recent trend of bars and restaurants made from shipping containers – Boxpark in Shoreditch was supposed to be a pop-up but was so popular it’s now permanent. And now the trend has spread to homes too. If you have the land, you could buy a shipping container and make a beautiful out-house like the one below.

4. A tree house

If you have a couple of spare years on your hands and a spare acre or two on your property, why not build yourself a tree house? It would be a fantastic escape from every day life, and you could have a holiday home in your own back garden.
