Traditional vs. Modern Christmas – Part 2

December 2nd, 2013 by Debbie

It can get a little tedious hanging the same old decorations every year. This post is dedicated to bringing you ideas on how to decorate your home for Christmas with more of a modern edge.

It’s important to remember that a contemporary Christmas can still give you that warm, nostalgic feeling – but you can play around with the traditional gold, green and red colours and find your own combinations that go with the décor in your home.

Here are a few ideas to give your home a bit of an edge this Christmas…

The Tree

When it comes to the tree, there’s no need to go too over the top. This tree is very simple with few decorations that stick to a colour format – silver and purple. Even the presents are wrapped in co-ordinated wrapping paper. This looks great as it goes with the interior and makes the room feel festive and modern while maintaining that Christmas feel.

The Wreath

I love the idea of making your own wreath. It’s a great excuse to go for a long walk in your local park or the nearest woodland, and gather up branches of berries and holly. You can spend the afternoon weaving together the bits and pieces you’ve found for a gorgeous wreath. This will not only look contemporary but will be wonderfully understated. Not to mention free and fun! Here’s a tutorial on how to make your own wreath.

The Table

I adore the look of this Christmas table. It’s so simple, yet very elegant. A great and easy idea for table decorations is a big, glass bowl of winter fruits, berries and pine cones. The owners of this Scandinavian kitchen have hung winter branches from the rafters which contributes to that Christmas look while keeping it simple and stylish.

The Hallway

As I’ve said before, it’s important to get the hallway right as it’s the first thing guests will see. In keeping with your minimal decorations, there’s no need to go overboard with this. No tinsel or fairy lights here – just tie a few Christmas decorations around the banister and Bob’s your uncle! It’s minimalist but effective, and if you’re running low on time this will definitely do the trick!
